Well Day 4 in the chook saga. Today we had 4 eggs and 1 was cracked so I had it poached for lunch. I gave their pile of nettles a bit of a stir up and they are still hoeing in like crazy. I changed all the nesting boxes from plant pots to milk crates, they seem to like these better for sitting in. Someone offered me a rooster yesterday but I declined the offer as I think the girls need to settle down in here environment first.

Monday 9/8/10. Today I weeded the rose garden and threw the chooks a heap of stinging nettles. I did not think anything would eat these nettles but the chooks devoured heaps of them. So far we have had 3 eggs off the girls, but they are still getting settled into their new environment. The dogs think they have got new toys to play with so they need to learn not to chase or touch the chooks. The chooks are quite funny to watch, they are quite stupid as poultry go. When 1 walked over the stinging nettles she started picking at her feet and legs, so I assume she got stung. They soon learned not to walk on them and just to eat from around the edges. I suppose this shows how quickly the learn???. They are getting into a routine now. They wait by the door to be let out at 8am and now they are all inside ready for lock-up at 5.30pm or nightfall. Not as stupid as I first thought. 2 more eggs today and 1 smashed in the nest.

Sunday 8/8/10 N and Harald and Gay went to Heyward to pick up 10 chooks for the new chook house. I have never had chickens before so it will be a fun learning experience. Previously we have had geese, goats,a cow, sheep, ducks and canaries in our back yard. Along with the mandatory dogs, cats and other pets.
